Today we spent the day traveling from Canakkale back to Istanbul. First we took a ferry ride across the Dardanelles, then continued along the coast of the sea of Marmara to Istanbul. Even with the rally in Taskim Square in Istanbul for May 1 Labor Day yesterday, where many demonstrators were sprayed with water and tear gas, we made it to the city safely!!! We were not in Istanbul. It is a regular occurrence and happened worldwide.

Once in Istanbul, we visited a spice market in the old city. Despite the crowds, we did get some good deals on many souvenirs!
Carrie Spicer smelling the mixed spice.
Afterwards we had a tour on a private boat on the Golden Horn as well as the Bosporus strait. Selcuk, our tour guide, explained all of the buildings that surrounded the waterway, which included Ottoman palaces and yalis (summer houses)
